About the Open Day:

Set on this beautiful Riverina property meandering along the Murrumbidgee – we showcase the majesty and resilience Of Australia’s native trees with internationally acclaimed Australian artist Janet Laurence, who has put trees and the plight Of nature at the heart Of her life’s work. Yabtree West hosts a beautiful community of River Reds, Box Trees and the resilient Kurrajong. Come and camp on the river Or stay in nearby Gundagai, for a day Of tree immersion and discussion of regenerative agriculture. See the work Janet has created on the farm and join her in a workshop to explore, observe and honour the tree.

The day starts at 10:00am but you may also arrive the night before or at 5:30am on the day to take a guided dawn walk to the highest point on the farm with Charles Sturt University Associate Professor of Ecology David Watson – a font of knowledge on birds, and their tree homes. Along the way we’ll identify birds and enjoy the spectacular dawn views Of the Mundarlo valley at the top. As the day progresses, hear about our on-farm soil and ecology work and enjoy lunch by the river all the while being inspired by Janet’s passion and work for nature.

If you’d like to camp overnight, please RSVP Lynne Turner at yabtreewest@gmail.com

Janet Lawrence

Janet Laurence’s practice has encompassed small objects through to vast installations. Increasingly, in recent years, she has worked beyond the museum’s walls to transform public sites through her immersive installations and environments using evocative natural materials such as ash, minerals and oxides, living plant matter, corals, taxidermy birds, and more. Researching historical collections and drawing on the rich holdings of natural history museums, her practice has, over time, brought together various conceptual threads, from an exploration of threatened creatures and environments to notions of healing and physical, as well as cultural, restoration.
