Tours operate:

  • Weekdays: 9:00am – 3:30pm

  • Weekends: 9:00am – 2:00pm

To begin your tour, visit the Gundagai Visitor Information Centre to collect your audio device and headphones, tour map and gaol key. The Old Gundagai Gaol is located just two blocks from the Centre, making it an easy short walk or drive.

Allow approximately 45–60 minutes to complete the experience as you explore the historic gaol complex and uncover stories of law and order in a frontier town. Step inside the cells that once held infamous bushrangers including Captain Moonlite and Peisley, while listening to world-class narration bringing Gundagai’s colourful past to life.

The Old Gundagai Gaol stands proudly on the corner of First Avenue and Byron Street, enclosed by impressive local slate walls with sandstone capping. Wander through the cell blocks, exercise yards and historic buildings while discovering hidden stories from one of regional New South Wales’ most intriguing heritage sites.

Please note: Because of the way the Old Gaol was constructed and the slope of the land, it is difficult to access for those with limited mobility. We are sorry for the inconvenience. If you require specific information about the gaol so you can consider your access requirements, please contact the Visitors Centre on (02) 6944 0250
