The Tuckerbox Pups are a charming addition to Gundagai’s main street, celebrating the town’s connection to the legendary Dog on the Tuckerbox, located just 8km north at Snake Gully.
The idea for the sculptures was developed by the Gundagai Main Street Art & Stories Committee, who wanted to create a playful link between the famous Dog and the township itself. The project was proudly supported by the NSW Government as part of Gundagai’s main street upgrade and beautification works.
Renowned sculptor Darien Pullen, who also created The Great Rescue of 1852 monument honouring the heroism of Wiradjuri men Yarri and Jacky Jacky, was commissioned to bring the vision to life. Three hand-forged bronze puppies were cast at Meridian Sculpture and installed in 2021.
Each pup captures a moment of personality and local charm:
Chip sits patiently outside Lotts Family Hotel.
Scoop plays with a newspaper outside FoodWorks and Local Liquor.
Snags tucks into a string of sausages outside Smarts Butchery.
Together, the Tuckerbox Pups invite visitors to explore Sheridan Street and enjoy a light-hearted connection to Gundagai’s most iconic resident, Lady, the Dog on the Tuckerbox.
